31st Annual Conference Special Interest Group (SIG) Day: A Day for Physicians

One of our Special Interest Group (SIG) days this year is: A Day for Physicians organised by the IADMS Medical Committee.
24th October 2021 - 8am-5pm (MST)
Join us for an expert lineup of Dance Medicine specialists and dynamic speakers who will impart their unique areas of knowledge and experience upon attendees. Physicians and other medical professionals who treat dancers will benefit from the diverse perspectives in the care of our dancer population that will be presented on this day. Prepare for an exciting day during which you will learn new concepts and approaches to take home to your dancer patients. This day will be of value to medical and surgical specialists, along with other healthcare providers who share a passion in the care of dancers.

Adaptive Dance
Mary Dubon, MD
Dr. Dubon is a Pediatric Sports Medicine attending physiatrist at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is fellowship trained and board-certified in both Pediatric Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, and therefore has a unique area of expertise. She has had extensive experience advocating for individuals with disabilities. She has perspective as a dancer, teacher, choreographer, director, and physician. She cares for youth para/adaptive athletes and dancers.

Head Kinematics
Jill Urban, MPH, PhD
Dr Urban is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Wake Forest School of Medicine, and is affiliated with the Center for Healthcare Innovation. She holds specialized training in injury biomechanics and public health. Her research focuses on contextualized biomechanical data to understand factors influencing head impact exposure in sports, to reduce head impact exposure and improve sport safety in youth populations.

Awareness-based neuromuscular repatterning (ABNR) for Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD)
Audre Wirtanen & Laura Tuthall
Laura Tuthall and Audre Wirtanen are the creative team behind the development of a new somatic therapy, Awareness-Based Neuromuscular Repatterning (ABNR). Together they run Hyp-ACCESS, a hypermobile-specific disability justice project. Their work addresses people with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders. They have collaborations with scientists from multiple institutions including Washington University, St. Louis, and Keene State, and have trained physical therapists in their technique. From a foundation of research and advocacy, they work with clinicians to improve care resources and access for this population.

Surgical Approaches to the Hip
Marc J. Philippon, MD
Dr. Philippon is an orthopedic surgeon who is internationally known for performing joint preservation techniques in high level athletes who use powerful hip rotation. He is co-chairman of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute and managing partner of the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado. He is director of Sports Medicine Fellowship and Director of Hip Research. He has treated numerous professional and Olympic athletes, with many returning to high performance, winning Olympic medals and setting professional sports records. He is a frequently invited speaker at Sports Medicine and Orthopedic specialty meetings, and has authored many peer-reviewed scientific articles. He has performed surgery in 15 different countries and has designed instruments to improve hip surgical techniques. He is a Trustee with the US Olympic and Paralympic Foundation and the US Ski and Snowboarding Foundation.

Injury Patterns in Hip-Hop
Julia Iafrate, DO
Dr. Iafrate is an Attending Physiatrist at Columbia University, who specializes in sports medicine and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. She is the Director of Columbia’s Dance Medicine program. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic and fellowship at the University of Iowa. She currently serves as one of the team physicians for the USA Ski Team and Columbia University Athletics.
